From Krakatau to Bali

The famous and very active volcanoes of East Java are as great to be visited as the cultural places such as the tempel of Borobodur and Prambanan.

We will start at Yogyakarta with the volcano Merapi and the visit of Prambanan and Borobodur. We will continue our tour eastwards with some hikes at the scenic and big Tengger volcanic caldera. Semeru is close by. the volcano Kawah Ijen with it's blue acid crater lake and sulfur mining inside the crater will be our last volcano visit before we will reach Bali.
On the island of Bali you can extend your travel independently.

Demands: Some steep climps up the volcanoes and the altitude up to 3700 meter makes this tour quite difficult. You definitely need be very fit and have to face basic life out in the nature.
Included on our tour:
All transport of the group (taxi, bus, boot and jeeps); porters; cooks; a tent for 2 persons each during some excursions; overnight in the hotels and; full board; drinks only limited; insurance to cancel the tour in case of health problems; entrance fees; tips
The travel comfort is very basic at the volcano and camps, because we are out in the nature. At the hotels and lodges the comfort is quite high.

Travelprogram day by day and (service included on the tour)

day 1: Arrival by plane at Jakarta (Java). Transfer to the hotel by taxi and welcome of the group.

day 2: During the morning a bus with driver will be provided for the first part of our tour from Jakarta to Yogyakarta. By midday we will start to drive from Jakarta about 150 km to the west coast of Java to the village of Labuan. At this village we will spend the night and organize the boot trip to Krakatau the next day.

day 3: After Breakfast we will do the shopping for the next two days. Then we will leave by boot towards the island of Krakatau 50km west of Java. That will take about 3 hours. After pitching up the tents we start exploring the volcano until dawn. Dinner will follow in the night.

day 4: We will spent the hole day at the island of Krakatau to explore the volcano. The meals will depend on the time scale of our excursions.

day 5: During the morning we go back by boot to Labuan. Our bus wil pick us up and until that evening we travel as far as the city of Garut (350 km). If there is time left, we will have a short Stopp over at the volcano of Tangkuban Parahu (30 km distance of Bandung). The base for the next three nights will be a basic hotel in Garut. Dinner will be at the hotel.

day 6: We have to get up early this morning to spent as much time as possible at the volcano Papandayan, 30 km away from Garut. After dawn we well be back in our hotel for dinner.

day 7: For this day we have the option to go to Papandayan again, or to have a look at the volcano of Galunggung. It will depend on the activity of the volcanoes.

day 8: Early morning we will start our journey towards the citiy of Yogya (400 km east). This city is already at the slopes of the volcano Merapi. We will stay there and after dinner, time should be left to visit the city center and a Wayang performance.(Transport; lunch; entrance to a Wayang performance; overnight in the hotel Batik Yogya II)

day 9: In the night we drive in one hour to the village of Kaliurang. The volcanoguide Christian Vogel will wellcome us with a tee before we start at 3 am hiking up the slopes of Merapi to see the lavaflows coming down from the summit in hot avallances. In this area our guide is always in contact with the volcanic observatory for our safety. After sunrise we willl enjoy a picknick in the nature. From Kaliurang we drive to the tempels of Prambanan in the afternoon. Dinner will be at our hotel in Yogya.

day 10: Sorry, but we have to get up early again to catch the fantastic sunrise at the tempel of Borobodur. Fpr lunch, we will drive to the village of Selo. This village is at the north slopes of Merapi an our starting point to hike up the following night. Dinner and accomendation will be at Selo.

day 11: At 3 o'clock we start hiking (3 hours) up the north slopes of Merapi with a lokal guide. For the sunrise we will stand right on top of the lava dom if the activity allows to do this. Uhr eine Vulkanbesteigung (Aufstieg ca. 3 Stunden) mit einem einheimischen Führer beginnen. For lunch we will be back in Selo and travel afterwards to the volcano Lawu. We will spent the night at a mountain lodge.

day 12: After breakfast we will first visit a tempel at the volcano Lawu. Than we hit off with a short stop over at the volcano Kelut to the city of Malang. A hotel in Malang will be the base for tonight with dinner.

day 13: With a lunch box we travel to the volcano Welirang, not far away from Malang. A hot bath in the djungle and the visit of a waterfall will be an easy daytour to relax. For dinner and the night we will be back in Malang.

day 14: After breakfast we will pick up the permit for the climb up Semeru and have some time left to visit Malang. From Malang we will drive to the Tengger Caldera and reach at Cemoro Lwang our hotel right at the rim to enjoy dinner there and the sunset.

day 15: For the sunrise we will hike down (1 hour) to the active crater of Bromo, lying in the middle of the 8 km wide caldera of Tengger. From Bromo we will hike in about 5 hours through the unike caldera and outside again to the village of Ranu Pani. A little basic hotel will be our target today for dinner and the night.

day 16: After breakfast we will start (at 2200 m altitude) the todays hike towards the volcano Semeru through djungle and mountain forrest. After about 8 hours we will reach our camp side at 3000 m altitude. For the transport of tents, food and luggage, some porters will be organized for our group. Dinner will be at this base camp at the steep foot of Semeru.

day 17: The hike up from the base camp (with helmet and without luggage) stars at 3 am and will take about 3 hours to catch the sunrise from the summit of Semeru. The views and to experience the eruptions of Semeru is undiscribable. At 10 am we have to descent to our base camp for lunch. Right after we continue our way down to 2400 m altitude to set up a camp for this night at a mountain lake shore.

day 18: Early morning we will hike back to Ranu Pani. Some 4xwheel cars will pick us up at Ranu Pani and bring us back to the hotel at the Tengger calderra rim.

day 19: Whoever is still fit enough can start at 4 am to do an easy hike up the caldera walls to reach a very good view point for sunrise. After breqkfast we will leave the Tengger and get by bus via Probolinggo to the mountain village of Bergdorf Jampit. This basic english styled hostel is already at the volcano of Ijen.

day 20: From our guest house we will start at about 3 am again to drive to the hike off point Pos Paltuding. For this easy climb up Kawah Ijen it will take about 1 hour to reach the crater rim and to enjoy the sunrise at this morning. We will also hike down into the crater of Ijen, where locals are mining pure solfur and carry this valuable stuff in 120 kg loads down the volcano. We wille descent without this kind of load and drive afterwards to the east coast of Java. At the city of Banyuwangi we will stay overnight and have dinner.

day 21: After breakfast we will take a ferry from Ketapang (Java) to Gilimanuk at the island of Bali (30 minutes). From Gilimanuk we drive by taxibus to the city of Kuta, a village at the south coast and close to the international airpoort of Bali.

day 22: This is a nescessary extra day and if left a chance to visit the volcanic calderea of Batur. We will also have some time left for shopping and celebrating our journey.

day 23: This is the day of departure for some of you, other continue with us to Lombok.

Drinking water, coffee and tea is always included. Also light alcoholic beverages for the meals, but limited by us. For all nights at hotels, standard double rooms or single rooms are provided depending on your boodking. If accommedation in one particular hotel is not availiable, equal accomlishmnet will be given. Further more, we reverse the right to change the program as nescessary.
Not included achievements: Journey (flights) to Indonesia and back; payments for a visa if required; departure-tax (about 10,- USD); your personal shopping, extra alcoholic drinks and expenditures.

Date of departure and costs:
The first day of this program is set for August 8th, 2003. The price per participant will be 2780,-US$ based on a group of 6-11 participants.
For single accomondation additional 270,-US$.
